Vitamin D protects against cancer death

According to a new study, increasing vitamin D levels through daily supplements seems to make people less likely to die of cancer by 13 percent.

A recent study by Michigan State University and the Hurley Medical Center found that taking vitamin D daily through supplements protects against premature cancer death. The results of this study and two other studies on vitamin D were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago.

Where does the body get vitamin D from?

Vitamin D is naturally produced by the body when exposed to the sun. However, modern lifestyle habits mean that most people spend a lot more time in buildings and therefore do not produce enough vitamin D. In a study, researchers found that people with vitamin D deficiency were more than twice as likely to develop pancreatic cancer and had a higher risk of colon cancer. The current study with 79,000 participants found that taking a vitamin D supplement for at least three years was associated with a 13 percent reduction in the risk of death for any form of cancer later in life. Another study on the subject found that taking a vitamin D pill daily with a statin reduced prostate cancer deaths by almost 40 percent.

Should we add vitamin D to foods?

Research on the subject intensifies discussions about adding vitamin D to common foods such as milk or bread. A practice that is already used in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Finland and Australia.

These foods are high in vitamin D.

While vitamin D is actually produced when the sun is shining, it can also be obtained by eating liver, eggs, red meat and plenty of fatty fish. However, there are millions of people who do not eat enough of these foods or do not get enough sunshine, especially in the cloudy winter months.

Vitamin D can be especially important for people with cancer

The study, which found that the risk of cancer could be reduced by 13 percent, analyzed the data from ten studies in adults aged 68 years and older. "The difference in mortality between the vitamin D group and the placebo group was statistically significant enough to show how important vitamin D could be for cancer prevention in the population," said study author Tarek Haykal of Michigan State University in a press release.

Protection against death from prostate cancer was massive

The study of the Madrid University Hospital in Spain, in which 2,280 men participated, found that those who received standard prostate cancer treatments and also took vitamin D and a statin were 38 percent less likely to die prematurely than patients who took neither vitamin D nor statins.
