A spoiled stomach ("spoiled stomach") is a temporary indigestion that occurs after consuming certain foods and luxury foods. Children in particular are often affected by a spoiled stomach, which leads to abdominal pain and nausea.

Synonyms

Upset stomach, dyspeptic stomach, stomach bug, upset stomach, upset stomach, stomachache, stomach discomfort, stomach pain.

Causes of a spoiled stomach

The complaints can be triggered by foods and luxury foods such as sweets, ice cream, sugary lemonade drinks (cola), fatty foods (French fries), but also fruit that is eaten in excess or mixed up. Small children in particular, who sometimes put all tangible objects in their mouths, sometimes eat inedible things.

Other possible causes are food poisoning or food infection. The former is caused by eating foods that contain toxins. These can occur naturally (e.g. in fly agaric or green tuber agaric) or enter the food from outside as a contaminant (e.g. as a residue during processing). However, food poisoning is mostly caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium botulinum.

Fish poisoning is a special form of food poisoning, which can occur through the ingestion of poisons from mussels, fish and other marine organisms.

A food infection, on the other hand, is caused by living pathogens that enter the gastrointestinal tract via the food. Here they multiply and trigger the symptoms, whereby a small number of infectious microorganisms is usually sufficient. In most cases, Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. Coli bacteria and Listeria are responsible for food infections.

Symptoms

Gastric pressure, severe stomach pain or abdominal pain and diarrhea can occur, some of which are cramped (colic). Usually there is nausea and vomiting, which should be closely monitored, especially in children, since the loss of fluid can quickly lead to internal dehydration with loss of electrolytes.

Treatment: what helps with tainted stomach?

With a tainted stomach, natural home remedies are very good for treatment. Before self-treatment, however, food poisoning or viral gastrointestinal infections and other intestinal diseases associated with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting should be excluded.

As a rule, the organism cleans itself and regenerates without therapy. To support the self-healing process and to relieve the symptoms, plants and measures from naturopathy can be used. In general, if you have a spoiled stomach, you should always ensure that you have adequate hydration.

Toxins are effectively absorbed by healing earth dissolved in water and thus alleviate the symptoms. If the “sandy” drink is refused, capsules with healing earth can also be used.

A traditional home remedy for nausea is the traditional oatmeal soup, because it has a calming effect on the stomach.

Recipe for oatmeal soup:
  1. Bring 250 ml of water to the boil
  2. Add 20 grams of oatmeal
  3. Boil the mixture briefly while stirring

In manual treatment methods such as osteopathy, gentle techniques from visceral osteopathy are used to try to relax the entire stomach region and thus help soothe the irritated stomach.

Medicinal herbal tea for stomach problems

Tea preparations made from chamomile flowers, peppermint and lemon balm can quickly alleviate stomach problems. The chamomile has anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects. Mint reduces the sensitivity of the gastric mucosa to nausea-causing stimuli and has a disinfecting effect. As a proven home remedy for stomach pain, lemon balm soothes the gastrointestinal tract and relieves cramps.

Effective tea recipe for stomach upset:
  1. Mix a teaspoon of chamomile flowers, peppermint and lemon balm leaves
  2. Pour a quarter liter of boiling water over the herbs
  3. After 10 minutes, the infusion is strained
  4. Drink the tea in small sips several times a day

Children can also be offered the medicinal plants as essential oils in the fragrance lamp. Bitter substances such as those found in Swedish bitter preparations are suitable for regulating digestion (only in adults!).

Natural treatment with Bach flowers

Bach flowers Crab apple (internal cleaning) combined with other flower essences that correspond to the emotional situation of the person concerned are suitable for internal use. For example, Willow is recommended when "swallowing anger". Gentian is for people who are constantly worried.

Acute pain improves when the abdomen e.g. is massaged clockwise around the navel with rescue ointment. This cream is a special combination of the six flower essences (Cherry Plum Clematis, Crab Apple, Impatiens, Rock Rose and Star of Bethlehem), which can be used as a first aid measure in emergencies. If symptoms in the stomach area are in the foreground, the ointment should be massaged in there.

Stomach spoiled: when to see a doctor?

If there is a risk of food poisoning, a doctor should always be consulted as a precaution. This applies in particular if the complaints change after eating food such as Show tiramisu, raw fish or poultry. If severe diarrhea occurs, it may be necessary to add additional liquids and salts to the body. Those affected should therefore drink a lot, preferably tea.

Special care should be taken with babies, young children, pregnant women and the elderly and immunocompromised. Because in these cases, food poisoning can have serious consequences. A visit to the doctor is therefore essential. Likewise, you should not wait if the symptoms persist for more than three days and / or other symptoms such as fever, severe circulatory problems or blood in the stool occur. (jvs, nr)
